Basics of Pet Nutrition

An Optimal Diet

The Foundation for a Healthy Animal Life

To ensure the health and vitality of animals, an adequate supply of the primary nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) is essential.

One of the fundamental characteristics of all living organisms is metabolism, which includes the intake, transformation, and release of various compounds. If metabolism stops, all other life processes will soon come to a halt as well.

Metabolism

Maintenance Requirements and Performance Requirements

A very important task of metabolism is the supply of sufficient energy, which is primarily derived from carbohydrates and fats. Only in the case of an excess of protein will this also be utilized for energy production.

Regarding the energy requirements of animals, a distinction is made between maintenance requirements and performance requirements.

The maintenance requirement refers to the amount of energy needed by the animal to maintain its most basic bodily functions. The performance requirement indicates how much energy needs to be supplied to the animal in order for it to perform a specific task. The maintenance and performance requirements together make up the total energy requirement, which the animal needs to achieve performance and maintain its bodily functions.

Covering Energy Requirements Optimally

How to Optimize Nutrient Balance

To provide the animal with an adequate amount of energy and thus cover its total needs, it is essential to supply sufficient nutrients.

However, when feeding animals, not only the quantity but also the quality of the provided food plays a decisive role. This is because, in maintaining all vital functions, not only nutrients but also active substances are of great importance.

Active substances, also known as food factors, must be supplied to the animal in sufficient quantities through food. In some cases, even small traces are enough to form an adequate amount of the active substance for the animal’s health.

Vitamins

Vitamins regulate vital processes in the body, strengthen the immune system, and help prevent deficiencies.

Minerals

Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc are crucial for the health of bones, teeth, nerves, and many enzymatic processes in the body.

Water

Water is the most important nutrient of all – it regulates body temperature, transports nutrients, and supports all metabolic processes.

Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids provide energy, support cell structure, and are crucial for skin, coat, and a functioning immune system.

Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins – they promote muscle growth, regeneration, and numerous functions in the body.

Active Ingredients

Essential for Your Pet’s Health

Active ingredients are compounds that do not serve as an energy source but instead positively influence all vital processes in the body through their action. Their absence can lead to the cessation of most essential processes in the organism of animals.

Active ingredients that the animal’s organism depends on are called essential (vital) active ingredients.
